Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in South Africa, and pharmacists play a vital role in prevention through patient education on sun safety. This CPD activity explores the impact of UV radiation, recognition of pre-cancerous lesions, and the importance of broad-spectrum sun protection, with a focus on sensitive skin conditions (eczema, acne, rosacea) and medications that increase sun sensitivity. Pharmacists will learn to recommend appropriate sunscreen formulations, demonstrate correct application techniques, and provide holistic advice to reduce the burden of skin cancer.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

• understand the impact of UV exposure on the skin and common types of pre-cancerous lesions and skin cancers;
• discuss the importance of sun protection and the incidence of skin cancer;
• describe the potential skin conditions associated with sun exposure and the importance of appropriate sunscreen formulations for dermatological conditions like acne, eczema and rosacea;
• demonstrate the correct amount and application method for sunscreen to achieve fullbody coverage and optimal SPF protection;
• educate patients on the timing and frequency of sunscreen application, including considerations for activities like swimming and sweating.
