Prostate Cancer

Description

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men worldwide and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. This CPD activity provides pharmacists with a comprehensive understanding of prostate anatomy and pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches, and treatment options ranging from active surveillance to surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy. Emphasis is placed on recognising and managing the adverse effects of treatment—such as urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and systemic complications of androgen deprivation therapy— and on the pharmacist’s role in counselling, supporting adherence, and collaborating with healthcare teams to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

• describe the role of the prostate and the process of prostate cancer diagnosis and staging;
• compare and contrast the available therapy options for prostate cancer;
• identify the adverse effects associated with the various prostate cancer therapies;
• discuss the management approaches for reducing the impact of the adverse effects associated with prostate cancer management;
• describe the role of the pharmacist in assisting men who have received or are receiving therapy for prostate cancer.
